There's something powerful about watching someone light up on a dance floor. At a recent Senior Prom hosted by Area Office on Aging, that's exactly what happened — older adults from across northwest Ohio came together to move, connect, and celebrate.
It's the kind of moment that's easy to smile at. It's also exactly what the science calls for.
Approximately 1 in 4 Americans over 65 are considered socially isolated — a condition that now ranks alongside high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity as a risk factor for premature death. Loneliness and isolation are associated with a 50% increased risk of developing dementia and a 30% higher risk of heart disease or stroke. Even as pandemic-era isolation has eased, rates of loneliness among older adults remain high — and are significantly worse for those already dealing with poor physical or mental health.
That's why the Community Foundation is launching the Healthy Aging Fund — connecting donors who are passionate about supporting older adults with the organizations and programs already doing this work in our region. In partnership with Area Office on Aging, we're helping more people find meaningful ways to support healthy, connected aging adults in northwest Ohio.
