Urban Farmer (Part-Time)

Summary

The Urban Farmer (Part-Time) is responsible for leading harvest operations and produce distribution through the CSA program at the Robert Anderson Urban Agriculture Center and Farm. This role works collaboratively with the full-time Urban Farmer to ensure efficient production, high-quality harvests, and successful community food distribution.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Harvest & Post-Harvest Operations (Lead)

  • Lead all harvesting of crops from greenhouse and field
  • Ensure proper harvesting techniques, timing, and quality standards
  • Oversee storage of produce
  • Maintain post-harvest handling systems and food safety practices
  • Track harvest yields and maintain accurate records

CSA Program (Lead)

  • Manage all aspects of the CSA program, including packing and distribution
  • Coordinate weekly CSA shares based on available produce
  • Track CSA inventory and member fulfillment
  • Ensure quality, consistency, and presentation of CSA shares
  • Assist with communication and logistics related to CSA distribution

Shared Farm Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with full-time Urban Farmer on planting plans and crop production
  • Share responsibility for care of chickens, greenhouses, and overall farm oversight
  • Share weekend and holiday coverage on a rotating basis
  • Maintain tools, equipment, greenhouses, and facilities
  • Responsible for general grounds keeping and campus upkeep

 Volunteers & Community Engagement

  • Co-lead volunteers, interns, and work groups, especially during harvest and packing, serving as lead during specific time of the year
  • Operate tractors, tillers, and lawn equipment as needed
  • Assist with workshops and educational programming
  • Support community engagement efforts and events

Communication & Administration

  • Maintain clear, timely communication with Executive Director and team
  • Keep detailed records of harvest volumes, CSA distribution, and volunteer engagement

Supervisory Responsibilities

Shared supervision of volunteers, interns, and work groups.

Qualifications

  • Experience in vegetable production and harvesting practices
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, physical environment
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to perform physical farm work in all weather conditions

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with CSA programs or food distribution systems
  • Knowledge of post-harvest handling and food safety
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Mechanical and equipment operation skills
  • Livestock/animal care experience

 Physical Demands & Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear and sit.  The individual will be required to use hands for holding, grasping and feeling objects; reach with hands and arms; bend and squat; lift or move up to 50 pounds.
