In partnership with the Department of Energy and The Foundation, Toledo School for the Arts invited Liam Teague, Professor of Music and Head of Steelpan studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU), to visit Toledo for a two night presentation on steel drums. The Foundation attended Liam Teague’s lecture and concert in the TSA Black Box Studio on November 5th, with the Glass City Steel Band accompanying.
As steel is the world’s most recycled product, with more steel recycled in any given year than all the other materials combined, Liam Teague's demonstration exemplified how “discarded items can be repurposed with beautiful results.” Further, originally designed and implemented in “island” music, Liam Teague challenges this notion and shows us steel drums’ significance within the musical instrument ecosystem.
