The Opportunity  

The Greater Toledo Community Foundation has been a force for community investment and impact for more than fifty years. By connecting generosity with meaningful community causes, the Community Foundation is the largest philanthropic institution serving northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. 

Guided by a new strategic plan, the Foundation is accelerating its development team. Under new leadership, the Foundation is addressing the region’s most persistent challenges while building pathways toward a more equitable and connected community. 

The Foundation seeks a skilled and collaborative Senior Advisor to join its newly created Center for Philanthropy.  This is an exciting opportunity to join an exceptional organization at a moment of strategic clarity and momentum.

With more than $560 million in assets across 1100+ funds, the Foundation is the region’s largest grantmaker, distributing over $30 million annually to support community needs, opportunities and long-term impact. 

The Community Foundation provides best-in-class donor services while aligning individual passions with meaningful community impact. In addition, the Foundation designs and hosts innovative programs that strengthen the region’s nonprofit ecosystem. 

Position Summary  

The Senior Advisor is responsible for advancing the Foundation’s philanthropic growth by building and managing relationships with high-capacity individuals, families and prospective donors. This role focuses on cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major and planned gifts while helping donors achieve meaningful, strategic impact in the community. 

The Senior Advisor manages a portfolio of donors and prospects, leads complex philanthropic conversations, collaborates with professional advisors and contributes directly to the Foundation’s fundraising and asset growth goals. 

Responsibilities   

Donor Portfolio Management 

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 100–150 high-capacity donors and prospects.
  • Conduct donor discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship with defined revenue goals.
  • Develop and implement individualized engagement strategies using moves management principles. 

Major and Planned Giving 

  • Secure major gifts, new charitable funds, and legacy commitments.
  • Identify planned giving opportunities and collaborate with internal partners on gift structuring and documentation.
  • Guide donors through complex philanthropic decisions aligned with their values and the Foundation’s mission. 

Family Philanthropy and Engagement 

  • Facilitate family meetings and multi-generational philanthropic discussions.
  • Support next-generation engagement and long-term family giving strategies.
  • Translate donor interests into actionable grantmaking and impact opportunities. 

Professional Advisor Collaboration 

  • Build and maintain relationships with attorneys, CPAs, financial advisors, and wealth managers.
  • Participate in advisor-led donor meetings as appropriate.
  • Represent the Foundation in professional and community settings to expand awareness and referrals.  

Impact Communication and Strategy 

  • Partner with internal teams to develop donor-facing impact narratives, reports, and updates.
  • Contribute to Foundation-wide fundraising initiatives, campaigns, and strategic priorities.
  • Actively participate in team planning, forecasting, and performance review processes. 

Key Performance Indicators  

  • New dollars raised and new funds established
  • Growth of portfolios and movement through the pipeline
  • Planned and legacy gift commitments identified
  • Alignment of donor intent with strategic priorities
  • Quality and consistency of donor engagement
  • Accuracy and completeness of CRM documentation 

Essential professional assets:  

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in major gifts fundraising or philanthropic advising.
  • Track record of securing significant gifts by building trust and confidently making the ask.
  • Strong interpersonal, consultative, and written communication skills.
  • Strong capacity to build trust and communicate thoughtfully with high-net-worth individuals and families.
  • Comfortable in a visible, external-facing role with frequent event participation and community engagements. 

Essential personal assets: 

  • Exceptional relationship-building skills with the ability to connect authentically with high-net-worth individuals and families.
  • Strong donor-centered communicator with excellent interpersonal, consultative, and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable in a visible, external-facing role, including donor meetings, events, and community engagement.
  • Highly collaborative team player who fosters trust, curiosity, and shared problem-solving.
  • Demonstrates high integrity, discretion, and sound judgment in managing sensitive donor relationships.
  • Results-oriented professional with strong time, portfolio, and pipeline management skills. 

Preferred assets: 

  • Knowledge of local philanthropic landscape and key community stakeholders and donors.  

Physical Demands:  

This role is based in a standard office environment and requires the ability to speak, hear, and see (near and far), move throughout the office, sit for extended periods and attend meetings. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities. 

Work Authorization:

This is a full-time, exempt, in-person position based in downtown Toledo. 

The Location  

The Greater Toledo Community Foundation is located in downtown Toledo, offering a collaborative and welcoming work environment. Northwest Ohio provides an exceptional quality of life with a low cost of living, strong schools, a vibrant arts and dining scene, access to Lake Erie and nationally recognized cultural and recreational amenities. 

Local and regional travel for donor meetings and community events is required, including occasional evenings and weekends.
