SUMMARY: 

The Education Support Professional provides individualized support for children with complex medical needs and school aged students at Sunshine to ensure continuity between school-year learning and summer programming. This full-time, year-round position reinforces IEP goals, supports homework and developmental skill building, facilitates communication with schools and families, and leads summer camp programming. The role bridges academic, developmental, and recreational support to help children achieve greater independence, developmental growth, social connection, and educational success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support and guidance with homework, assignments, and projects during the school year in collaboration with the residential manager/supervisor/DSP staff

  • Reinforce Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals in one-on-one and small group settings.

  • Develop and adapt educational materials to meet the needs of children with medical and developmental challenges.

  • Facilitate developmental skill-building activities (communication, life skills, motor development, problem solving).

  • Serve as lead coordinator for summer camp programming, including curriculum development, activity planning, and staff training.

  • Act as liaison with families, schools, therapists, and Sunshine staff to ensure consistency and communication.

  • Works closely with the Social Services department personnel with collaboration with families and schools

  • Document progress toward IEP goals and developmental milestones.

  • Collaborate with nursing staff to ensure medical needs are met safely during programming.

  • Provide updates and reports to families, including communication about progress and goals.

  • Oversee and mentor seasonal camp staff and volunteers in conjunction with the Behavior Support Manager and Behavior Support Supervisor.

  • Attends and participates in all multi-disciplinary team meetings that pertain to the individuals on their caseload as required.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Experience with IEP implementation, developmental programming, and use of AAC or assistive technology.

  • Experience in curriculum design and/or camp or recreational leadership preferred.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.

  • Ability to adapt programming to individual needs, including medical fragility and behavioral challenges.

  • CPR/First Aid certification required (or willing to obtain).

  • Special education teaching license or certification in Therapeutic Recreation a plus.

  • Valid driver’s license, safe driving record and auto insurance.

  • EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in special education, Child Development, Recreation Therapy, or related field required.

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience working with children with developmental disabilities and/or complex medical needs.
